Dear Prime Minister,

We are writing to you in our capacity as the representatives of the Palestinian communities in Europe to express our dismay and disappointment that you have chosen to celebrate the centenary of Britain’s 1917 Balfour Declaration, while ignoring the horrors that it has inflicted upon our nation and the wider Middle East.

That declaration, which pledged support for a “National Home for the Jewish people” in our homeland with scant regard for the human and political rights of our people, and Britain’s 31-year occupation of Palestine, which began that same year, were responsible for the establishment of Israel on 77 per cent of our homeland, the thwarting of our people’s attempts at self-determination, the fracturing of Palestinian society and the expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland. Their almost six million descendants, including ourselves, live in refugee camps or in cities in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and throughout the world, collectively forming what we call "The Palestinian diaspora".

Around 1.5 million descendants of the Palestinians who managed to remain in what became Israel are second class citizens in the state of Israel. Another 2.6 million live under Israeli military occupation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and 1.6 million live under deplorable conditions in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The disaster created for the Palestinian people has caused three full-fledged wars in the Middle East, has fuelled much of the violence in the region, and remains the main cause of instability in that part of the world.

That you are choosing to celebrate such a legacy encourages Israel to continue to colonise more Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, build more settlements on Palestinian lands, perpetuate its military occupation and violate the human rights of Palestinians living under that occupation.

The least that Britain can do is to finally acknowledge its role in bringing about the Palestinian Catastrophe, and to seek to redress the resulting injustice inflicted on our people.

Specifically, we ask that Britain unequivocally recognise the Palestinian right to self-determination and statehood and exert pressure on Israel to do likewise. We ask that Britain pressure Israel into immediately ceasing the building of settlements on occupied Palestinian lands and into dismantling the settlements that impede the establishment of a Palestinian state. Most importantly, we ask that Britain assume a leading role in pressuring Israel to negotiate a just and equitable resolution of the injustice done to the Palestinians that would at the very least entail Israel’s withdrawal from the Palestinian territories that it occupied in 1967, allowing Palestinians to exercise their right to sovereignty and self-determination.

Thanking you for your attention,

Yours faithfully
